Top 7 Detox Tips to Kickstart 2017

The holiday season brings so much cheer and excitement with all the celebrations, which gives us a perfect excuse for not sticking to a healthy eating plan. In between office parties, family gatherings, and community get-togethers, we tend to overindulge, and all attempts at living and eating healthy seem go straight out of the window.

But fret not. While you may have disregarded your health and diet over the holidays, it’s still possible to get your body back on a healthy track. Start the new year right with these 7 detox tips.

1. Drink up
With all the food and drinks you loaded on, your kidneys and liver may be working double time to filter out the unwanted toxins from your body. One way to help them do their job is by drinking more water. Aside from hydrating throughout the day, it’s also highly recommended to drink two full glasses of water upon waking up. Starting the day with water will help cleanse your system as it flushes out toxins, aids digestion, and gives you an energy boost.

2. Brush your skin
The festive season and dry weather can also take its toll on your skin. To help your skin recover, try dry skin brushing. It’s an effective way for starting the detoxification process. Brushing the skin helps loosen and eliminate dead skin cells, exfoliating the skin and improving its appearance. In addition to giving you glowing skin, dry brushing also helps in proper blood circulation and activates the lymphatic system, which is known to filter out bacteria, waste, and toxins from the body.

3. Stay active
A detox regimen wouldn’t be complete without exercise. Sweating out improves blood circulation, stimulates the digestive tract, and speeds up the body’s detoxification process. Staying active also boost oxytocin levels, making you feel better. So dust off that treadmill or try out dancing or boxing classes and get moving!

4. Add alkaline-forming foods to your diet
Reset your diet after the festivities by incorporating alkaline-forming foods to your meals. An alkaline diet balances the body’s pH levels, helps maintain a healthy weight, and promotes cardiovascular and immune health. Most fruits and vegetables are alkaline-forming foods. These include soybeans and tofu, eggplant, beets, grapes, banana, lemon, kale, pears, and more.

5. Try dandelion root tea if water is too bland
Want to stay hydrated but getting bored of drinking water? Try dandelion tea instead. It is a great way to detoxify and beat post-holiday bloating. Dandelion may be a pesky weed, but it actually brings many benefits to the body. Particularly, dandelion contains diuretic properties, which help promote better liver health. It helps purify the body by eliminating toxins, aids digestion, and balances the blood sugar levels.

6. Take a detox bath
A detox bath helps remove unwanted chemicals in your system and relaxes and rejuvenates the mind. The best part is, you can easily create your own detox bath at home. There are so many DIY detox bath recipes available, but the most common is combining 5-10 drops of essential oils and 2 cups of Epsom salt to a tub full of warm bath water. Soak yourself in this hot bath for about 20 minutes. Once done, shower off quickly in cool water and avoid using bath products with harsh chemicals.

7. Get a good night's sleep
Sleep plays a vital role in your overall health and wellbeing. Aside from banishing dark under-eye circles, a good night’s rest also restores the health of your brain. In fact, studies show that the brain clears out harmful toxins during sleep, a process that lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s.
